Pine River’s latest evaluation highlights lasting outcomes for youth and families—and the power of research, relationships, and the Parallel Process.
At Pine River Institute, we’ve always believed in the value of learning—not just for our students and families, but for ourselves. Our 2024 Annual Evaluation Report reflects that commitment, offering insight into what’s working, where we’re growing, and how we’re making a difference.
“Research helps us see what’s working, what’s not, and where to focus our energy,” said Anne Tong, Clinical Director, PRI.

This year’s report focuses on the changes our students and families experience during and after treatment—and how those changes last. It also explores the elements of our treatment model that drive these outcomes, offering insight into what we prioritize and why it matters.
“Our research shows gains that are sustained months and even years after kids leave our program,” said Karin Archer, Research Director, PRI.

A key part of our approach is the Parallel Process—supporting families as we support youth. Our evaluation tracks outcomes for both, recognizing that healing happens together.
Beyond the Campus: Expanding Our Reach
While the report centres on our live-in program, the learning informs all we do. Our Centre for Family Initiatives (CFI@PRI) continues to grow, offering webinars and workshops to parents and educators through school boards, and clinical training for professionals working with youth in agencies throughout Ontario to share our family model approach.
Meanwhile, our BRANCH Program—now in its second year—has doubled its capacity and expanded to nearly a dozen hospital partners.
“We’ve seen the benefit of working with the families. It’s made life-changing differences,” said Dr. Karen Wang, Adolescent Inpatient Psychiatrist, Sunnybrook Health Sciences.

Looking Ahead
As we extend our impact beyond Pine River’s campus, our goal remains the same: to help young people and families move forward—together. By sharing what we’ve learned and collaborating with hospitals, schools, and youth-serving agencies across Ontario, we’re strengthening the youth mental health and addiction sector.
