Pine River Institute is an innovative co-ed residential treatment program for teens struggling with addictive behaviours. We are a family-centered program comprised of 4 phases: Wilderness (Outdoor Leadership Experience), Residential, Transition, and Aftercare. Every student, upon entering the program, spends 6 or more weeks in Huntsville before moving to the residence. Day-to-day activities in wilderness include canoeing, hiking, snowshoeing, group initiatives, group and individual therapy, and journaling. Youths live and work in nature in groups of up to eight, with three staff.

Our campus is situated on 200 acres of spectacular Niagara Escarpment land near Shelburne, Ontario. The program here includes outdoor education, individual, group, and family therapy, expressive arts, athletics, and life skills, as well as the more traditional academic offerings. We are currently seeking experienced Residential Youth Counsellor at the Shelburne campus.

The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership, communication and positive role modeling skills, combined with a work style that embodies creativity and initiative.

Key Responsibilities

The Awake Overnight RYC reports to the Evening Shift Supervisor with responsibilities that include but are not limited to:

·        Ensuring the physical and emotional safety of students during the night (10:00PM – 8:00AM) including visual checks every 15 minutes.

·        Remaining awake through the night and respond to all emergencies and incidents.

·        Providing exceptional leadership, mentoring and positive relationships with students.

·        Contribute, as part of a multi-disciplinary therapeutic team to evaluate student progress.

·        Organize, lead and participate in daily student activities including

·        Daily life routines

·        Food preparation and related kitchen duties

·        help ensure the therapeutic goals of the program in general and the individual therapeutic plans for the students are realized.

·        Complete any assigned administrative support duties in a timely and professional manner.

·        Complete any housekeeping/maintenance support duties as assigned.

The ideal candidate will possess a passion for healthy cooking, good time management skills, able to multitask and the ability to work well unsupervised. This position would appeal to someone who enjoys cooking fresh, simple meals for large groups of people (40-60 persons).

Reports to: Executive Chef /Kitchen Manager and Assistant Kitchen Manager

Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Assist with preparation of meals for students, staff and visitors

  • Assist with maintaining the quality of food served, nutrition and cleanliness according to food safety regulations

  • Assist in the integration of the kitchen as part of the overall educational experience available to the students.

Qualifications, Skills & Experience:

  • Minimum 3 years experience in food service industry, as a

  • Experience in rotating bulk, frozen and fresh food

  • Must have current certification in Ontario Food Handler’s

  • Experience cooking for those with dietary restrictions an asset.

  • Knowledge of WHMIS

  • Previous experience cooking for 50+

 Pine River Institute is a Residential Treatment Centre and Outdoor Leadership Experience for youth 13 to 19 struggling with substance abuse and the cluster of behaviours often associated with it. Our campus is located on a 200-acre site 100 kilometers northwest of Toronto, Ontario,  and includes a residential program for 36 adolescents ages 13-19, an 8 youth therapeutic wilderness program near Algonquin Park, and an aftercare program, with an office in Toronto. Our family-centered program is innovative and highly structured , and creates opportunities for troubled teens to engage in a focused transformation process through a fusion of education , therapy , recreation , and life skills . The majority of our students are from Ontario, and are funded by the Ministries of Health and Education. We also work with families from across Canada, and internationally .

 Qualifications

 •  Graduate degree in a relevant therapeutic field

•  Registration with a relevant professional association

•  Minimum of 5 years related experience, with at least 3 years in a residential treatment facility and/or wilderness program is preferred

•  Demonstrated solid ability in providing individual and family therapy

•  Experience in working with adolescents , addictions and mental health issues

•  Familiarity with Relational, Systemic, and Experiential approaches to working with youth and their families

•  Previous experience with treatment planning is essential

Qualifications
We are looking for individuals with the qualifications and related experience in Wilderness field work. This individual will demonstrate patience, integrity, commitment, and an ability to maintain clear boundaries, and a sense of humour.

Required qualifications

·        WFR with experience managing backcountry medical issues

·        Minimum Bronze Cross Certification with NLS preferred

·        B.A., B.Sc., or college diploma in related field

·        Experience working with at-risk youth and young adults in a wilderness setting

·        Clear certification of Vulnerable Sector Criminal Check

·        Willingness to secure Canadian work permit, if required

Primary responsibilities
