Pine River Institute is an innovative co-ed residential treatment program for teens struggling with addictive behaviours. We are a family-centered program comprised of 4 phases: Wilderness (Outdoor Leadership Experience), Residential, Transition, and Aftercare. Every student, upon entering the program, spends 6 or more weeks in Huntsville before moving to the residence. Day-to-day activities in wilderness include canoeing, hiking, snowshoeing, group initiatives, group and individual therapy, and journaling. Youths live and work in nature in groups of up to eight, with three staff.

Our campus is situated on 200 acres of spectacular Niagara Escarpment land near Shelburne, Ontario. The program here includes outdoor education, individual, group, and family therapy, expressive arts, athletics, and life skills, as well as the more traditional academic offerings. We are currently seeking experienced Residential Youth Counsellor at the Shelburne campus.

The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership, communication and positive role modeling skills, combined with a work style that embodies creativity and initiative.

Key Responsibilities

The Awake Overnight RYC reports to the Evening Shift Supervisor with responsibilities that include but are not limited to:

·        Ensuring the physical and emotional safety of students during the night (10:00PM – 8:00AM) including visual checks every 15 minutes.

·        Remaining awake through the night and respond to all emergencies and incidents.

·        Providing exceptional leadership, mentoring and positive relationships with students.

·        Contribute, as part of a multi-disciplinary therapeutic team to evaluate student progress.

·        Organize, lead and participate in daily student activities including

·        Daily life routines

·        Food preparation and related kitchen duties

·        help ensure the therapeutic goals of the program in general and the individual therapeutic plans for the students are realized.

·        Complete any assigned administrative support duties in a timely and professional manner.

·        Complete any housekeeping/maintenance support duties as assigned.

 Qualifications, Skills & Experience:

·        Current Police Check with Vulnerable Sector Check (less than 90 days)

·        Demonstrated sound judgment, integrity, patience, commitment and a sense of humour

·        Some experience with and training in child and youth care practices

·        Demonstrated ability to be self-motivated and professional

Relief Cook

Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Assist with preparation of meals for students, staff and visitors

  • Assist with maintaining the quality of food served, nutrition and cleanliness according to food safety regulations

  • Assist in the integration of the kitchen as part of the overall educational and therapeutic experience available to the students and their families

  • Participate in daily student academic, recreational and therapeutic activities as required

Qualifications, Skills & Experience:

  • Police check with Vulnerable Sector Screening

  • Minimum 1 – 2 years experience in food service industry, as a Cook.

  • Experience in rotating bulk, frozen and fresh food supplies.

  • Must have current certification in Ontario Food Handler’s Course.

  • Some knowledge of nutrition and special diets.

  • Knowledge of WHMIS

  • Mature, reliable with a good sense of humour.

  • Team player.

  • Ability to work with no supervision

  • Able to prioritize duties and work within time allotted.

Relief Residential Youth Counsellor

RELIEF RESIDENTIAL YOUTH COUNSELLOR (RYC)

(PRI) is a residential treatment program for youth 13-19 struggling with addictive behaviours and frequently other mental health issues. We are a family-centred program where wilderness, therapeutic, and academic programs come together in a unique, integrated treatment and education model. PRI's treatment approach is grounded in enhancing adolescent development and maturation. The PRI program is unique in Canada.

The role of the RYC is to organize, lead, and participate in daily academic, recreational, and therapeutic activities with the students, including:

Providing exceptional leadership, mentoring and positive relationships with students through the following:

·        Participation in and facilitation of group meetings & discussions

Wilderness Program Support

Reports to: Outdoor Leadership Therapist/Program Manager

 This role is a combination of working at the school campus and working in the Field as support to the wilderness field instructors. This schedule will be a flexible schedule and will involve being on-call for wilderness work.

Wilderness Based work: Responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to the following:

Ø  Filling in for full time instructors when they are on vacation or sick/injured. 9 days in the wilderness

Ø  When necessary this person may act as a third OLE staff in order to keep the group running smoothly (ie 1:1 with a struggling student, campsite restrictions etc.)

Ø  Involved in instructor training – covering the group in the field, providing training to new staff, development and creation of new training topics.

Ø  Monitoring general safety of entire group, and specific wellbeing of up to 4 students. 

Ø  Organize, lead and participate in daily student activities.

Ø  One on one mentoring of up to 4 students. Providing exceptional leadership, mentoring and positive relationships with students.

Ø  Contribute as part of a multi-disciplinary therapeutic team to evaluate student progress and plan individual plan modifications as required.

Ø  Help ensure the therapeutic goals of the program in general and the individual therapeutic plan for the students are realized.

School based work: While at the school this person will be involved in all aspects of community based programming. This person will help to supervise students if a full time team leader is not available.  Organize, lead and participate in daily student academic, recreational and therapeutic activities.

¨    Providing exceptional leadership, mentoring and positive relationships with students.

¨    Help ensure the therapeutic goals of the program in general and the individual therapeutic plan for the students are realized.

Provide written reports as required in a timely and comprehensive manner.

¨    This person will help to organize and run the Peak Experience trip, team camping trips, 1:1 wilderness solos, outdoor initiatives, low ropes development and creative outdoor projects.

Qualifications

·        WFR with experience managing backcountry medical issues

·        Minimum Bronze Cross Certification with NLS preferred

·        B.A., B.Sc., or college diploma in related field

·        Experience working with at-risk youth and young adults in a wilderness setting

·        Clear Police Vulnerable Sector Check
